Advice to general public wishing to use the market

During the pandemic, through lockdown and now during the changing tier system, our consistent advice has been that we would dissuade the general public from visiting New Spitalfields Market.
This has been based on wider guidance, a need to protect the people working and trading in the market and our wish to ensure that the impact of COVID-19 on both the market and our local community is minimised.
We’re pleased to say that the approach we have adopted has been broadly successful. We have traded throughout, but there have been very few cases reported within the market and we have not been made aware of any that can be traced back to the market.
Nevertheless, we remain vigilant and committed to our stance that the health and safety of all market users is paramount. New Spitalfields is a public access market and as such, the general public are not prohibited from entering the site. However, there are still signs outside the market advising you not to do so.
This is a very busy time for our traders, as you will be aware, and if you are coming to the market as a member of the general public, you will find that the majority of businesses will be shut by 7am. If you do arrive after that time, do not be surprised if you’re unable to get what you want as our trade customers take precedence.
We would still dissuade you from coming if at all possible; the infection rate in London has been on the rise again lately and we must all work together to try and push that in the opposite direction. It’s been a tough year for everyone – we like you would like 2021 to be far better and that can only happen if we look after each other.
We wish all of our friends and customers a very Merry Christmas.
